Switching to a new generation of consoles can be a headache for avid gamers, especially if you crave to get a sure 100% completion of your favorite game. Fortunately, the Rockstar Games developers have taken care of their customers and provided some handy features to help them transfer GTA 5 Story Mode progress from old devices to freshly purchased ones. If you want to do it, read our instructions.
Why Transfer Progress?
GTA 5 is a very long and versatile game. If you have painstakingly collected all the achievements, developed your character step by step, and opened Easter eggs, you are unlikely to want to lose it all. To avoid starting the game again when buying a new device, you can transfer your progress to this device and continue to enjoy the walkthrough from the saved place. Besides, some users strive to achieve a reward for a full (100%) game completion, and migration progress helps them greatly. You’ll open all the trophies that you’ll have by this moment.
Uploading Progress to Cloud Servers
Transferring progress from PS4 and Xbox One to new consoles is made through convenient cloud servers from Rockstar. You need to launch the game, enter the menu, find the “Game” option, and click “Upload Save Game.” After that, you will be prompted to transfer one of the saved files. Pay attention to the date and progress to use exactly what you need. Confirm the transfer of this particular file in the pop-up window and wait for the process to complete. If you pick the wrong file, no big deal. You can repeat the migration procedure many times; only the file that was uploaded last will be stored on the servers.
The saving speed depends on your internet and connection stability, as well as the current server busyness. The dynamic white circle at the bottom right shows that the contact with the company’s servers has taken place. While transferring the data, do not turn off the console, as it may damage your files. It usually doesn’t take long; you will receive a notification when the download is completed. You will then have 90 days to move your data to the new device.
Downloading Progress From Cloud Servers
Now you need to move on to the second step and upload data from the Rockstar servers to your new device. Everything is as simple as saving the files. Load the game up on your new console and go to the “Story” tab. Here you will be prompted to “Download Save Game Data.” Agree to it and wait for the transfer process to complete. As with the first step, the download time may vary depending on the availability of the servers and the speed of your connection. Keep in mind that such a migration tool is available to you only once. Use it within 90 days after moving data to the servers so as not to lose your progress. We recommend double-checking which file you transfer carefully so that you don’t get frustrated after launching the game.
Rockstar Games has already offered this opportunity to its customers after the release of the new PS4 and Xbox One. It was temporary, and those players who did not have time to purchase these consoles couldn’t transfer their data. It is not yet clear when the developers will close their servers to move progress to PS5 and Xbox X/S, but it’s worth hurrying, given that these models were released back in 2020. In connection with GTA 5: Story Mode, the Online Edition is also worth mentioning. Since this version is always used with an internet connection, your progress is automatically saved on the servers. So migrating your Online character and achievements is even easier than in the main mode.
Are you a fan of the GTA series? How do you feel about progress transfers in games? Do you consider this a kind of cheating?
