Ubisoft Will Focus On Making Longer Games

Last week, the developer company Ubisoft reported its earnings for the previous quarter. According to published information, users of the shooter Far Cry 6 spent an average of 30% more on in-game purchases than on buying in the fifth part of the franchise. It is an awe-inspiring fact because at one time (to be more precise, in 2019), the company called Far Cry 5 its most commercially successful project.

The main reason for the success is the length of the game and a large number of additions and updates that motivate players to spend more money. As a case in point, Yves Guillemot, a company CEO, pointed to the relatively recent Ubisoft Assassin's Creed Valhalla project. After the game's launch in 2020, the developers gradually added a lot of downloadable content like additional quests, season passes, and unique game modes. Even this year, the company already has a planned massive update called Dawn of Ragnarok. Its release is scheduled for March 2022.

According to the developers, the presence of a large number of such things in games contributes to the greater interest of players and their desire to fork out. So, in December, the last part of Assassin's Creed consumer revenue crossed the $1 billion mark. In this regard, Ubisoft has stated that it plans to focus on longer projects in the future. Probably, its next game will provide users with a ton of additional content to keep them lingering longer. Whether it will harm the quality and replayability, time will tell. We only hope that Ubisoft will not follow Rockstar Games and its GTA Online into putting too much effort into one project while forgetting about new games.

What do you think about the news? How will such a materialistic and cold-blooded approach to development affect the final product?
